Design 101: Details Makes The Difference!

See below why I love this room!

I love this room that was designed by Bobby McAlpine that is featured in his new book, The Home Within Us. This is a great example of why "details makes the difference". Notice the unique and beautiful details that has been added to make this room special. Copy some of these details in your own home to achieve an extraordinary room!
My Top Ten Details:
1-Trim is painted a subtle pale color that is not white. White trim here would ruin the over all feel.
2-Matching art work that is colorful and matches the paint scheme. The art is hung at eye level.
3-Tailored and sophisticated draperies in a subtle color.
4-Natural cypress stained ceiling.
5-Matching lamps for a uniform look.
6-Bamboo stool becomes a focal point because of the interesting leg style that is seen as you enter the room.
7-Wall paneling that is a wonderful green that enhances the other subtle colors including the neutral walls.
8-Natural fiber rug that adds texture to the room.
9-A chair (left) that brings more of the refreshing green color into the room.
10-Reproduction round table on the left and food cart on the right; these mirror each other with style and color.

  1. One of my favorite rooms in McAlpine's new book! And you've done a great job of pulling out some of the design details.

I love how the bamboo stool legs, by being on the diagonal, really add a jolt of energy to the quiet, restful spirit of the room.

There's also a very subtle play between warm and cool tones going on in the space which adds a second layer of tension. The yellows on the couch, the color of the paneling and the green of the foreground occassional chair are all rather cool. The wood of the table on the left is as well. While the matting, frames, frame and central pillows on the couch are warm toned. Again it's a brilliant and sophisticated use of all the tools of great design.
